Many people are often impressed by the creative use of Christian motifs in Evangelion, but for me, I believe the value of Evangelion lies not only in its reinterpretation of the Bible but also in how it smoothly addresses critical questions from two major religions: Christianity and Buddhism.
As its title implies, it draws significant influence from the Bible. However, as the story progresses, it delves deeper into Buddhist themes and questions.
In the end, Shinji decides to dissolve the boundaries between individuals and merge everyone into a single, unified consciousness. The reason behind Shinji’s decision stems from his suffering due to the fundamental unknowability of oneself and others. By nature, humans are incomplete and require the presence of others, yet others can never fully understand us. This paradox creates fear of confrontation, as it did with Shinji. This is my interpretation of his actions.
By choosing to return to a world where individuals exist separately, Shinji demonstrates his recognition of the value and importance of human connection and interaction. He comes to understand that even though being separate can be painful and challenging, it also allows for growth, change, and the possibility of authentic connections with others.
This is why Shinji’s friends and companions congratulate him for his decision to confront the challenges of individuality and connection, despite the difficulties it entails.
