Discussing modern art requires understanding the term "modern" itself. Originating from "modernus," the term was first used in the medieval era to differentiate contemporary art from ancient Greek culture. Interestingly, in the 17th and 18th centuries, "modernus" was used again to distinguish the current from the former modern era.
"Modernus" is a relative concept. In the context of modern art, it encompasses both "현대" (contemporary) and "근대" (modern) periods. The modern era, 근대, marked a rejection of classicism, which is the representation of the world as it is. Instead, this era emphasized expression, leading to Romanticism. This movement set the stage for abstract art, which drastically moved away from representation to create a new world through art. Following this, the avant-garde movement emerged, further broadening the scope of art to encompass both the artistic and real worlds.
